Acupuncture with Dr Josephine Zhuo (TCM) · Traditional Chinese Medicine Sydney
Fertility acupuncture has become one of the most sought-after applications of TCM, with growing research supporting its role in both natural conception and assisted reproduction. Acupuncture may improve fertility by increasing blood flow to the reproductive organs, regulating hormonal balance, improving ovarian function and egg quality in women, and enhancing sperm quality and motility in men. src
For women, acupuncture treatment is typically aligned with the menstrual cycle. Different points and strategies are used during the follicular phase (to support egg development), around ovulation (to promote smooth release), and during the luteal phase (to support implantation and early pregnancy). This cyclical approach ensures the body receives targeted support at each critical stage of the reproductive process.
In TCM, fertility is closely connected to the Kidney system, which governs reproductive function, as well as the Liver (which ensures smooth Qi flow) and the Spleen (which produces adequate Blood). Common patterns seen in fertility patients include Kidney Yang or Yin deficiency, Blood stasis, Liver Qi stagnation, and Phlegm-Damp accumulation (relevant in conditions like PCOS). Identifying and treating the correct pattern is key to effective results.
Both partners are encouraged to participate in treatment where possible, as male factor issues contribute to approximately 40% of fertility cases. A typical course involves weekly sessions over three to six months — roughly the time needed to influence egg and sperm maturation cycles. Chinese herbal medicine and dietary recommendations are often included to support the treatment. Josephine has helped many couples on their fertility journey and provides a supportive, knowledgeable environment for this sensitive area of health.
